Wrist carpal tunnel syndrome - treatment

Wrist carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is one of the most common occurring neuropathies, or peripheral nerve damage, which is responsible, among other things, for sensory disturbances.

Symptoms indicating CTS include:

  • loss of dexterity in the hand,
  • weakened grip,
  • tingling in the area of the thumb and fingers,
  • difficulty making a fist,
  • finger pain and numbness,
  • decreased manual dexterity.

Wrist carpal tunnel syndrome - causes

The causes of this condition can vary, but it most commonly occurs in:

  • individuals who perform repetitive movements for many hours (typing, work on a warehouse assembly line),
  • actively practicing athletes and professional athletes,
  • individuals with improperly healed fractures and dislocations,
  • individuals with a deficiency of vitamin B6 and B12.

What does the procedure involve?

The procedure involves decompressing the median nerve in the wrist canal using an open method, by incising and dissecting tissues. The doctor cuts the flexor retinaculum, decompresses the nerve, and removes adhesions and degenerative changes. This enables improvement of nerve blood supply and its regeneration, leading to full functionality restoration. Pain disappears immediately after the procedure, while neurological functions usually return after about a month, depending on the severity of the disease.

The procedure is performed by Bartosz Chwedczuk, MD, a specialist in orthopaedics and traumatology of the musculoskeletal system. All procedures are carried out on an outpatient basis under local anaesthesia, and the patient can return home immediately after the procedure.
