Treatment of hypersalivation with botulinum toxin
At OrtoGo Medical Centre, a modern facility with over 30 specialisations, we offer one of the latest, safe, and effective methods for treating hypersalivation: therapy using botulinum toxin.
Hypersalivation, medically known as sialorrhea, is the excessive secretion and accumulation of saliva in the mouth, which for various reasons is not effectively swallowed. This problem is not only an aesthetic nuisance but also a health and practical obstacle. It hinders the daily care of the patient, necessitating multiple changes of clothing or bibs.
The situation is particularly challenging for people with neurological diseases and children with neurodevelopmental disorders, where the underlying issue is the dysfunction of muscles necessary for swallowing and retaining saliva in the mouth. Statistics show that up to 60% of children with cerebral palsy experience this problem.
The health consequences of uncontrolled saliva secretion are severe: from irritation and maceration of the skin around the lips, through mucosal ulcers, sore throat, hoarseness, difficulty speaking, unpleasant mouth odour, to heartburn, vomiting, breathlessness, and an increased risk of upper respiratory tract infections, especially during the autumn-winter period. Posterior hypersalivation, which is not noticeable, can lead to aspiration pneumonia.
The impact of this condition on the psyche of patients cannot be overlooked either. Hypersalivation lowers self-esteem, generates feelings of shame, and creates reluctance to engage in social relationships. Among children, it often results in social exclusion by peers and the surrounding environment.
At OrtoGo Medical Centre, we use botulinum toxin therapy, the only registered and effective method for treating hypersalivation in children. This toxin is administered directly into the salivary glands under ultrasound guidance. This procedure inhibits the secretion of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine at the parasympathetic nerve endings of the glands, thereby reducing saliva production. The therapeutic effect lasts for at least 16 weeks, with visible improvement starting from the fourth week after the first injection. This treatment is not only effective but also safe, with a high tolerance profile and no systemic adverse effects.
