Knee treatment
Knee pain - possible causes
Knee pain is a condition that can affect us at any age, and depending on the causes of the painful symptoms, it may have different origins. Factors causing knee pain can vary: degenerative changes, inflammatory conditions, injuries and overuse changes, and even bacterial infections.
Knee pain - most common disorders
Knee dislocation
Dislocation of the knee joint is most often the result of a severe injury, e.g., falling from a height, a car accident, or a sports injury. It involves the displacement of the knee joint surfaces in such a way that there is no contact between them. It is one of the more severe knee injuries, so immediately after the injury, swelling and haematoma appear around the damaged joint. The joint may look unnatural, and there may be fluid in the knee.
Knee sprain
A knee sprain often results from overuse and an unnatural, sudden twist or rotation of the knee. Unlike knee dislocation, knee sprain does not involve detachment of the joint surfaces. As a result of the sprain, the range of motion in the joint is exceeded. A sprain is often accompanied by a haematoma, swelling, and restricted limb mobility.
Degenerative pain
The most common factors causing knee degenerative disease are advanced age, excessive body mass, sports, knee injuries, and overloads, as well as genetic factors. Knee degenerative disease is a chronic inflammation of the knee joint. It usually manifests as knee warmth, joint pain, knee stiffness (especially in the morning), and limited knee mobility. Patients often report "crackling" and "popping" sounds, most often during sudden knee movements.
Jumper's knee
Runner's knee
It should be noted that knee pain can be caused not only by disorders occurring in the knee joint area but also by factors such as:
- strenuous physical work,
- overweight or obesity,
- standing/sedentary lifestyle,
- improperly fitting footwear.
Knee pain treatment
Treatment depends on the diagnosis of the disease. In inflammatory conditions, knee pain can be treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Injuries such as runner's knee or jumper's knee often involve regenerative therapy using platelet-rich plasma. Important! Remember to see a specialist if:
- you experience knee pain,
- the pain interferes with your daily functioning,
- you experience limited knee mobility,
- the knee is warm to the touch or significantly swollen,
- you feel looseness in the knee during activity.
