Painful shoulder syndrome may also be caused by repetitive movements, overloads, and accumulation of many micro-injuries.
Painful shoulder syndrome - symptoms
- initially mild, but gradually increasing and sharp pain when lifting the arm,
- swelling around the shoulder joint,
- increased muscle tension,
- muscle weakness,
- sleep disturbances - pain also occurs at night,
- problems with arm abduction,
- stiffness of the shoulder joint.
Painful shoulder syndrome - diagnosis and treatment
Diagnosis of painful shoulder syndrome is usually based on a thorough medical history and patient examination. Physical examination allows assessment of joint mobility and recognition of inflammation. The doctor may also recommend additional diagnostic tests, such as ultrasound, X-ray, or magnetic resonance imaging. Treatment of PSS usually involves administration of analgesic and anti-inflammatory drugs, local steroid injections, and appropriately tailored physiotherapy. In extreme cases, surgery may be necessary.
