Synovial bursa inflammation
What is synovial bursa?
The synovial bursa is a product of the synovial membrane, the inner layer of the joint capsule. Its main function is the production of synovial fluid, which significantly facilitates sliding and reduces friction between joint elements and muscles. It resembles a bag or a bubble of varying sizes - depending on the location. There are many types of bursae in our body, which is why they are prone to overuse and inflammation. Synovial bursa inflammation is an inflammatory condition, the cause of which may be both concurrent conditions and excessive stress on the synovial bursa.
Synovial bursa inflammation - causes
The cause of synovial bursa inflammation is not straightforward. Inflammatory conditions can be caused by several factors:
- prolonged stress leading to the accumulation of many micro-injuries, such as repeated performance of a specific task,
- cyclic loads (e.g. frequent lifting of weights),
- sudden traumas (impacts, falls, injuries),
- inflammatory diseases, e.g. gout or rheumatoid arthritis (RA),
- infections.
Synovial bursa inflammation - symptoms
- redness of the skin around the inflammatory area,
- swelling,
- warmth at the site of injury,
- pain, worsening with movement,
- joint stiffness,
- tenderness of surrounding tissues on palpation,
- reduced range of motion of the affected joint.
Synovial bursa inflammation - diagnosis and treatment
In determining the appropriate course of action for synovial bursa inflammation in a patient, diagnostic tests, particularly ultrasound examination, may be helpful. Ultrasound helps detect fluid accumulation in the vicinity of the synovial bursa. Sometimes, the doctor may also recommend an MRI, but this is only necessary in case of significant issues. In the treatment of synovial bursa inflammation, a combination of pharmacotherapy with physiotherapy often proves effective. A crucial aspect of treatment is adhering to the doctor's recommendations, which may include: reducing physical activity and resting, avoiding positions that exacerbate pain in the area of inflammation, applying cold compresses, or temporary immobilization with an orthosis.
