Guyon canal syndrome

Guyon canal syndrome is a hand disease affecting the ulnar nerve, often also called ulnar tunnel syndrome. It causes wrist pain and numbness in the forearm and fingers, which often wake the patient from sleep. Untreated, the disease can result in hand deformity and significant loss of function.

Symptoms of Guyon canal syndrome:

  • numbness of the IV and V fingers at night or in the morning,
  • reduced sensation in the palm area around the little finger,
  • rapid hand fatigue after work,
  • difficulty straightening the little finger along with the others.

Causes of Guyon canal syndrome:

  • compression of the ulnar nerve in the canal, where it passes at the wrist level, e.g., by overgrown soft tissues, ganglions, tumors, fibrosis, calcifications, but also by bone fractures.

What does the procedure involve?

The procedure involves cutting the ligaments restricting the nerve on the ulnar (inner) side and removing bone fragments lying around the ulnar nerve to prevent further compression.

The procedure is performed by Dr. Bartosz Chwedczuk - a specialist in orthopedics and traumatology of the musculoskeletal system. All procedures are performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia, and after the procedure, the patient can immediately return home.
