Treatment of contusions

A contusion is trauma most commonly associated with sports. However, they can also occur due to overuse at work, and may also result from the accumulation of micro-injuries due to repetitive movements, often occurring to patients even during daily household activities - caused, for example, by sudden movement.

Contusions can be divided into two types: chronic or acute contusions. Chronic contusions are characterized by the accumulation of micro-injuries. Repeated overloads lead to a state where our body no longer heals properly. A chronic inflammatory condition appears at the site of the injury, which manifests gradually. Initially, it may be pain when performing specific activities, gradually increasing until it becomes constant for the patient. The inflammatory condition may also manifest as tenderness at the site of the injury, and ultimately lead to difficulties in smooth movement and daily functioning.

Acute contusions are those that occur suddenly in a patient. It could be, for example, muscle tear or joint sprain. With such injuries, the pain is sharp and appears suddenly.

Remember to promptly seek a specialist for any injury. The doctor will recommend further steps, as well as prescribe appropriate treatment and form of rehabilitation. Untreated and undiagnosed contusions often tend to recur in the future and may lead to degenerative changes.
