Heel spur

Heel spur is a degenerative condition. In other words, heel spur is a bony growth that occurs with plantar fasciitis. The site of occurrence is the area of the medial tubercle of the calcaneus. Inflammation combined with heel spur leads to shortening of the plantar fascia, resulting in severe pain in this area.

Heel spur - symptoms

In the vast majority of patients, heel spurs are associated with severe pain in the heel area. Initially, the pain accompanies the patient during movement, but over time it can become static - the pain will also accompany the patient at rest. The pain is often described as burning or even scorching, causing difficulties in wearing shoes and walking.

Heel spur - causes

The causes of heel spurs can be various. Often, it is poorly fitting footwear that causes us to place our feet in unnatural positions, which over time can lead to injuries. Heel spurs often occur with foot overloads caused, for example, by work or training. Contributing factors also include: prolonged standing, overweight and obesity, previous ankle or foot injuries, foot structural abnormalities (congenital or acquired).

Heel spur - diagnosis

Diagnosis of heel spurs begins with a medical history and palpation examination. During the medical history, the doctor will determine the location of the pain, its intensity, and the possible degree of advancement of the condition. Palpation examination involves the specialist touching the foot. Heel spurs can be easily confused with other foot conditions. Manual examination helps determine the exact location of the painful symptoms. In further diagnosis, the doctor may request imaging tests - X-rays or ultrasound.

Heel spur - prevention

The most effective way to prevent heel spurs is to wear well-fitting and properly profiled footwear. When choosing shoes, we should remember to have soft, stable soles above all. Normalizing body weight is also helpful. Overweight and obesity contribute to foot overload and the development of injuries.
