Ligament inflammation

The task of ligaments is to strengthen the mobile connections between bones. They are durable bands of connective tissue, one of the basic animal tissues. Their primary functions are: supporting the skeleton, strengthening joints, and supporting internal organs. Tendons have a very similar structure. The basic difference between these elements is the type of connection they serve: ligaments connect bones together, while tendons are extensions of muscles, attaching them to a specific bone.

Symptoms of ligament inflammation

Ligament inflammation is usually characterized by:

  • pain symptoms,
  • swelling at the site of inflammation,
  • increased feeling of warmth in the area of injury,
  • joint stiffness and mobility problems.

Causes of ligament inflammation

Ligament inflammation can be caused by injury. Inflammatory conditions can occur not only as a result of injury to the ligament itself but also to the joint or muscle in the vicinity of the ligament.

Treatment

Individually tailored rehabilitation plays a very important role in the treatment of ligament injuries. It will help not only in alleviating pain symptoms but also in restoring full functionality to the patient. A popular physiotherapeutic method is, for example, kinesiotaping, which involves applying a special, elastic tape to the body surface.
