Runner's knee

Runner's knee is a condition most commonly affecting individuals who engage intensively in sports. Although the name suggests that it is a condition occurring in people who engage in running, runner's knee can affect anyone who engages intensively in sports. The characteristic feature of runner's knee is pain located in the front part of the knee, around the patella.

Runner's knee - causes

The most common cause of runner's knee is overuse. By consistently engaging in sports, we can lead to constant overuse in the knee joint. Although this is the main cause of problems leading to the development of runner's knee, there are several other factors that can cause this condition. Runner's knee can be caused, among others, by patellar chondromalacia (softening or cracking of the patella), growth pains (occurring during adolescence, caused by hormonal changes in the body), disturbances in the production of synovial fluid (causing increased friction in the joint and increasing the likelihood of mechanical damage). Runner's knee can also be caused by maintaining improper positions for a long time (long periods with bent knees), as well as frequent wearing of high heels.

Runner's knee - symptoms

Runner's knee is characterized by painful symptoms in the front part of the knee, which may worsen during long periods of rest with bent knees and during movement activities directly loading the knee joint, such as climbing stairs, squats, or running.

Diagnosis and treatment

Problems associated with runner's knee can also affect other parts of the body. The strain occurring in the knee joint can cause the transfer of the function of the damaged joint to other muscles, which is called muscular compensation. Diagnosis and selection of treatment should be carried out by a qualified orthopedic specialist. The doctor will conduct an interview and basic physical examination, and may also refer for further diagnostic tests.
