Tennis elbow

Lateral epicondylitis of the humerus, colloquially known as tennis elbow, is a condition that, despite its name, affects not only athletes. In contrast to golfer's elbow, where pain is felt on the inner side of the elbow joint, in the case of tennis elbow, the pain is felt on the outside.

Tennis elbow - causes

What causes tennis elbow? Among the causes, we can include strains, often caused by a high repetition of movements, which can lead to the accumulation of many micro-injuries. The pain associated with tennis elbow arises from an active inflammatory state. Tennis elbow can occur during activities such as: repair work (e.g., fitters or bricklayers), office work and remote work (programmers, IT specialists, office and administrative workers), as well as during overexertion or improper exercise in sports.

Tennis elbow - symptoms

The most characteristic symptom is pain on the outer side of the elbow. Painful sensations may occur during activities such as: lifting, gripping, or grasping. In advanced cases of tennis elbow, the pain may even occur at rest. Symptoms often hinder patients' daily functioning, and upon examination by a specialist, it is found that the pain is accompanied by strong tissue tenderness in palpation.

Tennis elbow - diagnosis and treatment

Pain in the elbow area can have many causes. Undoubtedly, the diagnosis should be made by an orthopaedic specialist. After the interview and palpation examination, the doctor may request further diagnostic tests (e.g., ultrasound) or refer the patient to a physiotherapist. The orthopaedist will prescribe appropriate treatment and advise on how to properly care for the elbow to minimize its burden in daily functioning. A commonly used technique in treatment is injecting the diseased area with platelet-rich plasma. PRP therapy allows for the regeneration of damaged tissues and accelerates healing processes in inflammatory conditions.
