Injuries
Injuries are most commonly associated with sports injuries. It is true that the strains associated with sports, lack of proper preparation, such as warming up, or improper exercise technique can lead to various types of injuries. However, besides sports, in everyday life, patients also suffer injuries. What is this caused by? The causes can be various: falling from a height, car accidents, accidents at work, or long-term factors, such as regular strains.
Most common injuries
Tendon tear or rupture
Tendon tears most commonly occur in individuals who start physical activity without preparation or in those who frequently perform repetitive movements (e.g., at work). Tendons are collagen fibers that connect muscle to bone. Tendon tear is a partial tearing of collagen fibers. Symptoms of tendon tear include: pain, swelling, inflammation at the site of rupture.
Joint sprain
A sprain is an exceeding of the physiological range of motion of the joint. It can occur, for example, during a sudden twist or rotation. Sprains can be classified into three degrees: mild, moderate, and severe. Treatment is selected accordingly to the type of sprain. For a mild injury, cold compresses and cessation of physical activity for some time are often sufficient. In more severe cases, it may be necessary to immobilize the joint with a stabilizer or a plaster cast.
Joint dislocation
Joint dislocation involves the displacement of the joint surfaces, preventing them from contacting each other. It is characterized by acute pain in the joint area, swelling, bruising of the skin around the injury, and stiffness of the joint.
Fracture
A fracture involves the complete interruption of bone continuity. Fractures can be classified as closed or open. A closed fracture is characterized by intact skin, while an open fracture is one where the bone pierces the skin, causing a wound. Causes of fractures can vary, with the most common being bone diseases and sudden traumas (fall from a height, accident, impact).
Patellar instability
The patella is a flat bone located in the knee, precisely at the front of the knee joint. It plays a crucial role in the proper functioning of the knee. Patellar instability, or patellar dislocation, involves the displacement of the patella from its correct position, causing a rupture of the apparatus that stabilizes the patella.
Treatment of injuries
Treatment always depends on the severity of the injury. Severe, acute injuries may require surgical treatment. However, mild forms of injuries can be successfully treated on an outpatient basis. Treatment methods may include: immobilization with an orthosis, platelet-rich plasma therapy, hyaluronic acid therapy, or rehabilitation.
