Joint treatment

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a condition involving damage to joint tissues. Joints are movable connections between skeletal elements. A healthy joint consists of:

  • articular surface - these surfaces may have different shapes, but most commonly they are divided into the head, i.e., the convex part, and the joint socket, i.e., the concave part of the joint capsule
  • joint capsule, which connects the joint surfaces together, joint cavity - a small space between the joint surfaces, filled with synovial fluid, which reduces friction and ensures smooth movement.

In osteoarthritis, all joint tissues undergo degradation. The most noticeable symptoms for the patient are pain and limited mobility of the affected joint or joints.

Joints most prone to injury

Elbow joint

This joint connects our arm with the forearm. It is responsible for proper extension and flexion of the elbow. The elbow joint consists of three pairs of joint surfaces: humeroulnar, humeroradial, and proximal radioulnar. The most common disorders affecting this joint include golfer's elbow and tennis elbow.

Hip joint

The hip joint is one of the largest joints in our body. Its main functions are to maintain the body in an upright position and to enable free movement of the lower limbs. It consists of the acetabulum, which is also part of the pelvis, and the head of the femur located in the acetabulum. The most common disorders of the hip joint include hip dysplasia, inflammation of the hip joint bursa, or damage to the hip joint cartilage.

Knee joint

Analogous to the elbow joint, which connects the arm with the forearm, the knee joint connects the thigh with the lower leg. It is responsible for flexion and extension of the lower limbs. It consists of joint surfaces: the femoral condyles, formed by two convex condyles of the femur bone, and the patellar surface, which consists of two condyles of the tibia bone and the patella. Disorders occurring within this joint include runner's knee and jumper's knee.

Ankle joint

The ankle joint connects the bones of the lower leg with the bones of the foot. It consists of: the upper ankle joint, i.e., the talocrural joint, and the lower ankle joint, also known as the subtalar-talocalcaneal joint. The most vulnerable part of this joint is the risk of sprains or dislocations.

Therapy with platelet-rich plasma and hyaluronic acid

In the treatment of orthopedic disorders, therapies using platelet-rich plasma and hyaluronic acid bring excellent results. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is helpful in supporting intensive regeneration in joint and tendon injuries and in treating overuse injuries (e.g. above-mentioned tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, runner's knee, jumper's knee) in orthopedic disorders. Hyaluronic acid, on the other hand, is a natural component of synovial fluid. Its proper amount in the joint capsule ensures proper joint function and mobility. In orthopedics, it is effective in treating conditions associated with reduced synovial fluid volume or viscosity. Due to its properties (protection and nutrition of articular cartilage), hyaluronic acid is also used in degenerative diseases.

Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation is a field of medicine aimed at improving and restoring functional ability and quality of life to physically disabled, impaired, or those with musculoskeletal injuries or neurological disorders. It is also an important element in the conservative treatment of joint disorders. At OrtoGo Medical Centre, you will receive individually tailored treatment.
